Sunny Sweeney, ‘One More Christmas Beer’ – Song Review
Fans of Sunny Sweeney's would be horrified to hear her sing a jolly Christmas traditional like 'Silent Night' or 'O Come All Ye Faithful.' That sort of song fits the East Texas singer like a dress fits Blake Shelton. 'One More Christmas Beer' is, if nothing else, honest.
"It's that time of year / When we all get together / And afterwards we wonder why / 'Cause the later it gets / The drunker we are / Someone always ends up in a fight," Sweeney sings to open the rolling, mid-tempo anti-yuletide song. It's reminiscent of the Robert Earl Keen (and then Montgomery Gentry) hit 'Merry Christmas From the Family.'
The chorus goes, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em / Get drunk and annoy 'em / I'm usually the one who tries to hold it together, but someone smoked up all my Christmas cheer / We don't know any better / Same thing, different year / God bless the family, can't wait 'til it's over / Pass me one more Christmas beer."
The NASCAR references later in the song will elicit a few laughs from the audience Sweeney is targeting, and year after year the song should hold its value. This type of dysfunctional Christmas song is far from over served, and the 'Drink Myself Single' singer proves herself to be well-versed in matters of family drama. Stick around to the finish to hear an almost snorting laughter after she fakes a burp. It's adorable.
